Sussex, Surry, Southampton Virgina

on Route 460

The Line and the Signs

or

Signs are not always Right

These three counties meet at one point in southeast Virginia near Route 460. The line first got my attention when I was in to area in 1994. The maps showed that Route 460 heading southeast crossed from Sussex into Surry County, and then into Southamption County. The county lines signs disagreed. They showed only the county line of Sussex and Southamption Counties.

With better maps easily available I noticed that in the DeLorme Street Atlas USA 6 that again the map showed that Route 460 did indead cross Surry County. Reviewing other maps available on the internet they all agreed. The maps put the road in the county for about 700 feet. An e-mail to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) showed the true facts. The signs are not correct but were placed as they are to avoid confusion. VDOT said the road was in Surry for about 100 feet but to avoid two signs and the confusion that would ensue they placed only a sign for the county line of Sussex and Southamption Counties. In fact this county line does not exit along Route 460. There is a county line of Sussex and Surry and then a short distance later the county line of Surry and Southamption.
